Dry Ice Blasting vs Soda Blasting: Which Is Better?

Soda blasting and dry ice blasting are both marketed as gentle alternatives to sand. The deciding factor is what is left on the floor and on the equipment when the crew packs up.

Soda blasting uses sodium bicarbonate as media. It is mildly abrasive, water-soluble, and effective at stripping paint from soft substrates like aluminum and fiberglass without warping or profiling them. Its weakness is that every pound of media stays in the workspace — inside enclosures, on the floor, in cable trays — and has to be collected and usually rinsed away.

Dry ice blasting uses solid CO₂ pellets that sublimate to gas on impact. There is no media to recover, no rinse step, and no alkaline residue to neutralize. That is why it dominates in food and beverage plants, electrical rooms, and any environment where introducing residue creates a new problem after the cleaning problem is solved.
