What Is Dry Ice Blasting? A Complete Guide for Industrial Cleaning

Dry ice blasting uses solid CO₂ pellets and compressed air to clean industrial equipment without water, grit, or secondary waste. Here is how the process works and where it fits.

Dry ice blasting — also called CO₂ blasting or dry ice cleaning — is a modern industrial cleaning method that uses solid CO₂ pellets accelerated by compressed air to remove contaminants from a surface. On impact, the pellets transfer kinetic and thermal energy to the contaminant layer, then sublimate — turning directly from solid to gas — leaving only the removed contaminant behind.

Unlike sandblasting, soda blasting, or pressure washing, dry ice blasting introduces no secondary media into the work area. There is no grit to recover, no water to dry, and no slurry to dispose of. That single property is why dry ice blasting has become the preferred cleaning method in food production, power generation, electrical rooms, restoration, and any environment where water or abrasives are not acceptable.

How dry ice blasting works

A blasting machine meters CO₂ pellets (about 3 mm in diameter) into a compressed-air stream supplied by a diesel or electric compressor at 80–250 psi. The accelerated pellets strike the surface at near-supersonic velocities and produce three simultaneous effects.

  • Kinetic effect — the pellets impact and chip the contaminant layer.
  • Thermal shock — the pellets are −109 °F (−78.5 °C); the rapid temperature drop embrittles the contaminant and shrinks it away from the substrate.
  • Micro-explosion — the pellet sublimates on impact and expands roughly 800× in volume, lifting the contaminant off the surface.

Because the dry ice sublimates on impact, there is no media to rinse, sweep, or recover. The only cleanup is the contaminant that was already on the part.

What dry ice blasting will not do

Dry ice blasting is not a surface profiler. It cleans down to the substrate but does not anchor-pattern bare metal the way sandblasting does. If your goal is a 2 mil profile before a high-build coating, you still need an abrasive. Dry ice blasting is the right choice when you want to preserve the underlying surface — molds, electronics, finished components, painted assets — not change it.

Operators wear hearing protection (the blast can exceed 110 dB), insulated gloves, face shields, and appropriate PPE. Around electrical equipment, dry ice blasting is paired with lockout/tagout and minimum approach distances exactly like any other industrial cleaning method.
