In practice, contractors use all of these to describe the same process: solid CO₂ pellets accelerated by compressed air against a contaminated surface.
The terms, decoded
- Dry ice blasting — the most common North American term; the industry standard in RFPs.
- CO₂ blasting / CO₂ cleaning — the same process, named for the medium rather than its solid form. Common in power generation and European specs.
- Dry ice cleaning — usually used for gentler, lower-pressure work such as food equipment or restoration.
- Carbon dioxide blasting — the formal chemical name; appears in safety documentation and engineering specs.
- Cryogenic cleaning — a broader category that includes dry ice blasting but also covers liquid-nitrogen and CO₂-snow processes.
One real distinction: pellets vs. snow
CO₂ snow cleaning is not the same as pellet blasting. Snow cleaning uses liquid CO₂ expanded through a nozzle to form fine particles for precision cleaning of optics, semiconductors, and medical devices. It removes molecular and particulate films — not carbon buildup or coatings. Industrial dry ice blasting uses solid 3 mm pellets and is the process you want for equipment cleaning.
How to write it in a scope of work
Use "dry ice blasting (CO₂ blasting)" the first time and "dry ice blasting" thereafter. Specify pellet size or shaved-ice mode, blast pressure range, whether the equipment stays in place, and the acceptance criteria — clean to base metal, clean to coating, or clean to visual standard. Naming the process alone does not define the outcome.
