Dry Ice Blasting for Rubber and Tire Molds

Rubber molds foul faster than almost any other tooling. Sulfur-cure byproducts, zinc oxide, and release agents bake onto the cavity every cycle, and within a few hundred cycles the vents plug and the detail softens. The traditional answers — bead blasting, laser, or chemical soak — each cost either tool life or press time.

Compared to bead blasting
Bead blasting works but is cumulative: every cycle removes a little metal, rounds sipe edges, and enlarges vents. Over the tool's life that shows up as tread definition loss and flash. Dry ice removes the deposit without removing steel, so the mold ages on its production cycles rather than its cleaning cycles.
Compared to laser cleaning
Laser is precise and media-free, but it is slow on large segmented molds and capital-intensive. Dry ice covers a full mold set far faster. Many plants use both — laser for fine detail rework, dry ice for routine full-mold cleaning.
