Injection molds foul in a predictable pattern: outgassing residue in the cavity, plugged vents at the flow front, and release-agent buildup on shutoffs. Every one of those causes defects — burns, short shots, flash, and cosmetic rejects — and every traditional cleaning method costs press time.
The in-press advantage
Dry ice blasting cleans a hot mold in the press. That matters twice over: you skip the pull-and-reinstall cycle, and the temperature differential between a hot tool and −109 °F media dramatically improves release of the deposit. A cleaning that takes four hours by pulling the tool is often 30–60 minutes in place.

- Cavity polish — no abrasive contact, so SPI finish is preserved
- Vent depth — vents are cleared, not opened up or eroded
- Texture and grain — chemical etch texture is not flattened
- Steel dimensions — no material removal on shutoffs and parting lines
Practical method
- Blast the tool at operating temperature whenever possible
- Use fragmented or fine media at reduced pressure on polished cavities
- Work vents parallel to the land, not perpendicular into the channel
- Mask hot runner electrical, thermocouples, and hydraulic cores
- Vacuum capture at the platen opening; ventilate the press pit
