Dry Ice Blasting vs Pressure Washing: A Practical Comparison
Pressure washing relies on water. Dry ice blasting eliminates it. That single difference reshapes when each method makes sense.
Pressure washing is fast, familiar, and cheap per square foot — when the target can tolerate water. The problem is that most industrial equipment cannot. Water leaves behind moisture, corrosion, microbial risk, and electrical hazards long after the crew has packed up. Dry ice blasting solves that by replacing water with sublimating CO₂ pellets.
Where pressure washing fails
- Around energized or de-energized electrical equipment and controls
- Inside dry production environments (bakeries, snack lines, dry mixing)
- On insulation that absorbs moisture and harbors bacteria
- On corrosion-sensitive substrates and tight-tolerance machinery
- On equipment with bearings, seals, or electronics that cannot be re-sealed afterward
- Where wastewater capture, treatment, or permitting would be required
Where dry ice blasting wins
- Power generation switchgear, MCCs, transformers, and HRSGs
- Food production lines that cannot be hosed down between shifts
- Mold and fire restoration where moisture worsens damage
- Equipment with sensitive electronics nearby
- Injection molds and tooling cleaned in-press
- Anywhere the cleanup of the cleanup is the real cost
Where pressure washing is still the right call
Open structural steel, parking decks, building exteriors, heavy equipment yards, and any outdoor surface that needs bulk dirt removal and can drain freely is still a pressure-washing job. Dry ice blasting is not trying to replace your pressure washer for those tasks.
Total cost, not hourly rate
Pressure washing looks cheaper by the hour. Dry ice blasting wins on total cost when you factor in teardown, drying time, wastewater handling, corrosion risk, restart delays, and the chance you damage something expensive with water that should not have been wet in the first place.
