Hydroblasting (water jetting) is the heavy artillery of industrial cleaning: at 10,000–40,000 psi it removes deposits nothing else touches. That capability comes with the highest injury severity profile in the trade and a wastewater stream that has to be captured, treated, and manifested.

Where hydroblasting is the right call

  • Heat exchanger tube interiors and internal bores
  • Hard mineral scale, coke, and polymer in vessels and piping
  • Tank bottom sludge removal
  • Any internal geometry a blast nozzle cannot see

Where dry ice is the better tool

  • External surfaces of equipment, structures, and machinery

Safety comparison

Water jetting injuries are catastrophic — high-pressure injection wounds require immediate surgical care. The standards around it (exclusion zones, hands-free equipment, dedicated attendants) reflect that. Dry ice has real hazards (CO₂, noise, cold) but no mechanism for a comparable severity injury. That difference alone drives many facilities toward dry ice for accessible external work.

Waste and disposal

Hydroblasting produces contaminated water measured in hundreds or thousands of gallons per shift. If the contaminant is regulated, that water becomes regulated waste. Dry ice produces only the contaminant, typically collected dry in a HEPA vacuum — often a hundredfold reduction in waste volume.
