Surface Preparation with Dry Ice Blasting: When to Use It
Where dry ice blasting fits in coating removal and surface preparation — and where you still need an abrasive to anchor-pattern bare metal.
Surface preparation is not one job. It is a spectrum from gentle coating removal on a finished asset to aggressive profiling of bare structural steel. Dry ice blasting owns one end of that spectrum — clean removal without changing the substrate. The other end still belongs to grit.
Where dry ice blasting is the right tool
- Coating, paint, and ink removal from molds, tooling, and finished components
- Mill scale and light oxidation cleanup without anchor pattern
- Adhesive and sealant removal from production equipment
- Soot, smoke, and char removal after fire damage
- Stripping rooms and substations where water or grit cannot be tolerated
Where you still need an abrasive
If your spec calls for SSPC-SP 10 near-white metal with a 2 mil anchor profile under a high-build epoxy, dry ice will not get you there. Dry ice cleans down to the substrate but does not profile it. For that you need grit, garnet, or shot blasting.
Why people switch from soda or sand for coating removal
- No secondary media to recover or dispose of
- No water in the work area — safe near electronics and energized gear
- No abrasive damage to molds, dies, or finished surfaces
- Cleanable in place — less teardown and faster restart
Decision shortcut
Need to remove without profiling? Dry ice. Need to profile bare steel before coating? Grit. Need to clean a finished asset between coats? Almost always dry ice.

Will dry ice blasting strip paint?+
Yes — most single and multi-layer coatings come off cleanly, particularly when there is a thermal differential between coating and substrate.
Does it leave an anchor pattern?+
No. Dry ice removes coating and contamination but does not profile the substrate. If your coating spec requires a profile, follow dry ice with an abrasive step.
Can it remove rust and oxidation?+
Light surface oxidation and flash rust — yes. Heavy mill scale on raw structural steel is still a grit-blasting job.
Is it faster than soda blasting?+
On most coating-removal jobs, throughput is comparable. The big wins are no media to recover, no alkaline residue, and no impact on future coatings.
