Compressed Air Requirements for Dry Ice Blasting (CFM, PSI, and Air Quality)
Air supply is the most common reason a dry ice blasting job underperforms. Here is how to size CFM and pressure, and why moisture and oil in the line ruin throughput.
Dry ice does the cleaning, but compressed air does the work of getting it there. If the air supply is short on volume, wet, or oily, the cleaning rate drops and the crew burns hours and pellets making up for it.
Volume and pressure by job type
- Precision and food-contact cleaning: 100–185 CFM at 40–80 psi
- General industrial cleaning: 185–375 CFM at 80–120 psi
- Coating removal and heavy carbon: 375–750 CFM at 120–200 psi
- Two or more operators simultaneously: add full CFM per additional nozzle
Why plant air often is not enough
A typical plant header supplies a mixed load at 90–100 psi and may not tolerate a sustained 375 CFM draw without starving production equipment. Most contractors mobilize a dedicated towable diesel compressor for exactly this reason — it protects your process air and guarantees consistent blast performance.
Air quality matters as much as volume
- Moisture — condensate freezes at the feed point and clumps pellets, causing pulsing and jams
- Oil carryover — contaminates the surface you just cleaned; a real problem on food and coating-prep work
- Particulate — accelerates nozzle wear and can embed in soft substrates
Use an aftercooler and a coalescing filter, and confirm the dew point is below ambient at the work face. On humid Gulf Coast summer jobs, a refrigerated dryer is often the difference between smooth feeding and a morning of nuisance jams.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my plant air instead of a compressor?+
Sometimes, if the header can sustain the required CFM without affecting production. Most contractors bring their own compressor to avoid that risk.
What happens if CFM is too low?+
Pellet velocity drops, cleaning slows dramatically, and consumption per square foot rises. The machine will still run — that is why the problem often goes unnoticed.
Does compressor fuel factor into the price?+
Yes. Diesel for a 375 CFM unit typically runs 4–6 gallons per hour and is usually included in the day rate.
